WaterAid’s Equality, non-discrimination and inclusion toolkit gives practical guidance and support on reducing inequalities in programme and advocacy work. It introduces the most important equality, non-discrimination and inclusion principles, and includes practical activities, tools and checklists for applicants to apply to their work with partners and communities.
WaterAid is determined to make clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene normal for everyone, everywhere within a generation.
This resource provides a framework for making their work more inclusive, and includes tools which they can use to put the theory into practice. There are so many tools available it can be hard to know which ones to choose and when to use them. This resource brings together tried and tested resources that will help to embed equality, non-discrimination and inclusion in work. Throughout the toolkit applicants will find:
- Key Concepts
- Actions
- Useful information and resources
- Key tools
- Bonus tools
There is no one-size-fits-all solution WaterAid can pick up and apply to make the work inclusive; they need to do a range of different things, adapted to the specific context.
It’s not a linear process either; some activities can be carried out at various times in the programme cycle, and some can be run in parallel. An activity may result in unexpected outcomes, requiring responding in ways to had not originally anticipated, adapting their approach. Focusing on the principles of the rights to water and sanitation will help guide journey towards equality, non-discrimination and inclusion in WASH.
WaterAid’s Steps to inclusive WASH diagram shows the steps must take to achieve inclusive WASH for all. Remember – these are not a series of standalone actions. They must be embedded in everything applicants do. Approach should be adapted for the local context and flexible enough to take advantage of opportunities as they arise.
